If every video you post stalls at around 200 views, you are not cursed and you are probably not shadowbanned. The 200-view plateau is TikTok’s testing pool: the algorithm shows each new video to a small initial audience, measures how they respond, and only pushes it further if the numbers clear the bar. Stuck at 200 means your videos are consistently failing that first test.
What the first test actually measures
Three numbers decide whether a video escapes the pool: how many people watch past the first 1.5 seconds (the hook), average watch percentage, and interaction rate (likes, comments, shares per view). A video that loses half its viewers in the first second almost never escapes, no matter how good the rest of it is.
The usual culprits, in order of likelihood
1. Slow openings. The most common issue by far. If your video starts with a logo, a greeting, or context-setting before the payoff, the scroll takes people away before the algorithm counts them as engaged. Open on the most interesting frame you have.
2. Reposted or watermarked content. Videos carrying another app’s watermark, or re-uploads of content TikTok has seen before, are deliberately suppressed. Export clean and upload native every time.
3. Inconsistent posting after a break. The algorithm favours accounts with a steady cadence. Coming back after a month off often means several videos in the testing pool before reach recovers — most people give up right before it does.
4. Captions with nothing to search. TikTok is a search engine now. A caption like “😂😂” gives it nothing to index. Two or three plain-language keywords describing what the video shows can be the difference between one audience and two.
5. Genuinely low watch time. Sometimes the answer is uncomfortable: the videos are not holding attention. The tell is when your older videos did better with the same posting habits — the format got stale before you did.
How to diagnose which one is yours
Look at your last 20 posts as a dataset, not one at a time. Is the plateau new or has it always been there? Did it start after a break, after a format change, after you started reposting from another app? Your breakout videos — even small ones — are the control group: whatever they did differently is your way out.
