You made a video, it performed well, you tapped Promote to put money behind it — and TikTok rejected it. The rejection message is vague, but in our experience auditing channels post by post, one cause towers over all the others: the audio is not cleared for commercial use.
Why audio kills boosts
The trending sounds library that powers organic TikTok is licensed for organic use only. The moment you pay to promote a video, it becomes advertising, and advertising needs commercially licensed music. If your video uses a trending song from the general library, Promote will refuse it — automatically, every time, no appeal.
What audio is safe to promote
Your own voice and original audio. Voiceovers, talking-to-camera, original sounds you created — always safe.
The Commercial Music Library. TikTok maintains a separate library of tracks cleared for commercial use. When you switch your account to a Business account, the sound picker shows this library by default.
Licensed tracks you own. If you have your own licence to a piece of music, you can use it — but the burden of proof is yours.
The other rejection reasons (the minority)
Watermarks from other apps (including editing-app bumpers like the AutoCut outro), before/after health claims, unreadable text, screen-recording borders, and anything touching restricted categories (supplements, finance, gambling). These matter — but audio is the one that catches channels over and over, because trending sounds are how most people learned to make TikToks.
The strategic fix: make boostable the default
Channels that want the option of paid reach should flip their default: own voiceover or Commercial Music Library on every post, trending sounds only as a deliberate exception. That way any post that over-performs organically can be boosted the same day — instead of discovering, at the exact moment a video is hot, that it is locked out of Promote forever. When we audit a channel we classify every post’s audio as ad-safe or not for exactly this reason; most channels are shocked to learn what percentage of their library is unboostable.
