“Shadowban” is the most over-diagnosed condition on TikTok. The platform does quietly limit some accounts — but most people who think they are shadowbanned are actually seeing normal reach decay, a failed content test, or a community-guidelines strike they missed. Here is how to tell the difference in five minutes.
The quick test
Step 1 — check your notifications and account status. Profile → Settings → Account → Account status. Actual violations show here. If a video was flagged, its reach (and often your account’s) is limited for a period. This is not a shadowban; it is a documented penalty with an expiry.
Step 2 — search your own recent hashtag. Post a video with a niche hashtag (not #fyp — something with a few thousand posts). Wait an hour, then search that hashtag from another account or logged out. If your video appears, you are not hidden from discovery.
Step 3 — read your analytics, not your feelings. In your analytics, check the “For You” percentage of traffic on recent videos. Shadowban-like states show near-zero For You traffic across every recent video. If some videos still get For You distribution, the algorithm is testing and declining them — a content problem, not a ban.
What actually triggers reach limits
Repeated community-guideline flags (even borderline ones), reposting content TikTok has seen elsewhere, watermark spam, follow/unfollow automation, and comment-section behaviour that looks like spam. Music matters too: videos using audio that is not cleared for commercial use can be quietly excluded from some surfaces, which is also the number one reason TikTok Promote rejects boosts.
If you are limited, how long does it last?
Strike-based limits usually expire in days; the timer is visible in Account status. Pattern-based suppression (reposts, spam signals) lifts gradually once the pattern stops — typically within two weeks of consistently posting original, native content.
And if you are not shadowbanned?
Then the honest question is why the algorithm keeps declining your videos at the testing stage — hooks, watch time, cadence, searchable captions. That is diagnosable from your posting history.
